Scrimshaw by Kim & Katherine McClelland
Kim & Katherine McClelland of Galena, Ohio use the time-honored techniques of nautical engraving that was used by the indigenous peoples of America to decorate whale teeth & bones as well as walrus tusks. Designs are cut in with a sharp tool and ink rubbed into the grooves to expose the incised image. Due to the worldwide ban on ivory, scrimshaw artists today use a synthetic material that is very similar to the traditional materials.
