Sweetgrass grows along marshy areas of the northern Rockies into Canada. Many people of North America consider sweetgrass sacred for its ability to purify and protect. Often found in medicine bundles, the smoke from the leaves is used in ceremonies to clear objects, places and people. Sweetgrass braid is held above a heat source or flame to allow a smoke plume to escape; one may fan the smoke over the person or object. The braid will not burn with applied heat and burns very slowly. Once it has cooled, the edges of unused portion may be trimmed with scissors to prepare it for the next use. Sweetgrass is most often used to start ceremonies, attract positive energies and always to call sweetness into one’s life.
